Workshop on Economics Reform and Development of China: Past, Present and Future
This year marks the fortieth anniversary of economic reform, a workshop organized jointly by the Department of Economics, University of Macau and the China Center for Economic Studies, Fudan University, was held on 15th – 16th December 2018. The Workshop intended to bring scholars to present their insights of the economic transformation of China over the preceding four decades. The feature of the workshop was its comprehensive coverage of key issues involved in China’s reform, including
• Reform from historical, institutional and global perspectives;
• National, regional and sectoral measures and progress of reform; and
• Experience and lessons of reform on long term development.
This Workshop includes three keynote speeches on the nature of technical changes and human capital, barriers to entry and regional economic growth in China, and economic growth and government accountability with environmental protection issues. It has another 14 papers on macro issues, Sino-US issues, institutions, productivity, and technology.
The Interim Vice Rector (Research) delivered an opening remark. He said that the first two decades were largely a reallocation of resources among sectors, ownership and geographical locations in order to generate a large production capacity and efficiency. China’s reform faced the promotion of globalization during the second two decades: WTO membership, global financial crisis, and the recent Sino-US economic disputes. It appears that challenges are even much larger now than 40 years ago. He added that the Workshop was a timely magnificent opportunity to collect research outcomes from different scholars from China’s Fudan University, Chongqing University, Sun Yat-Sen University, and others from Canada, US and Australia.
